Jan-Lennard Struff is in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon. Daniel Altmeier has also advanced, while Maximilian Materer is out.

Brutal service, strong body language and steady nerves: Jan-Lennard Struff has made a successful start to the grass court classic in Wimbledon. The German number two from Warstein won his opening match on Monday with 6:4, 6:7 (4:7), 6:2, 6:3 against the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan.

Daniel Altmaier also fought his way through to the next round with a 4:5, 7:6 (8:6), 1:6, 6:3, 6:1 win after 3:43 hours of play against Briton Arthur Fery. The tournament, however, is over for Maximilian Marterer after a 3:6, 1:6, 4:6 defeat against Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain.

“I’m very happy with the way I played and that I won,” said Struff. “It’s wonderful to be here. Even after several years, you still appreciate it because it’s so beautiful here.”

Wimbledon: Struff has been moderately successful so far

After a difficult start, Struff (34) quickly fought his way into the match and was the more offensive player against the world number 43. The Munich winner quickly got over the annoying set loss and safely secured the win. Struff will now face Zhang Zhizhen (China/No. 32) in the second round: “He is a very dangerous and good player.”

Struff’s best result so far on the “holy turf” was reaching the third round in 2018 and 2019, and this year he wants to continue if possible. A total of five German men are starting in the main field, Dominik Koepfer had to cancel his participation at short notice due to injury.
