Jannik Sinner beats Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Wimbledon tournament

On Wednesday night, Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner defeated his compatriot Matteo Berrettini in the second round of the Wimbledon tournament by three sets to one (7-6, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6). The two had faced each other only once before, in 2023, in the round of 32 of the Masters 1000 in Toronto, where Sinner also won by two sets to zero. Sinner is ranked first in the world of tennis players and on Friday 5 July he will challenge Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round, who also on Wednesday had beaten Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor by three sets to two.

Wimbledon is one of the four major tournaments of the tennis season and so far no Italian tennis player has ever won its singles tournament; only Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci managed to do so in doubles, in 2014, while Berrettini came very close three years ago, reaching the final and losing three sets to one against Novak Djokovic, the number two in the world ranking, who in 2023 lost against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

Also on Wednesday, Fabio Fognini beat Norwegian Casper Ruud three sets to one (6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3), while in the second round of the women’s singles Jasmine Paolini, the fifth Italian ever to reach the final at Roland Garros, beat Belgian Greet Minnen two sets to love.
