Jannik Sinner Reflects on Grueling Victory at Wimbledon 2024

Jannik Sinner avoided the abyss in this improvised night session before Matthew Berrettini in the Center Court of Wimbledon 2024. Despite sharing his frustration at certain moments on the court, the world number one was able to put on his work clothes to end up taking the victory and advancing in the British Grand Slam. Already in a press conference, Sinner explains how he feels after the victory and what the keys to it were.

“It was a tough match. He served very well and so did I, especially in the first two sets. Then I made a mistake at the start of the third set and that made his confidence go up,” explains Sinner, speaking about those tiebreaks. “These moments come and go both ways. In two of the three tiebreaks he was up a mini-break, but I was able to get it back quickly. I served very well in the tiebreak, I also guessed the returns. These small details make the difference against a tennis player like Matteo, an incredible player on grass.”

Why does it slide on the grass?

“I don’t know, in the first few years I tried not to slide. Then at some point I realised that sometimes it can help. It doesn’t have to help you all the time, but it makes it easier to recover after hitting. It also depends on the conditions, if the court is wetter or drier. You have to be careful, but it’s a part of my game that I’ve improved. I feel like I can still improve my movement on grass, but overall I feel a lot better every year.”
