Japan’s Akira Sone Wins Gold in Women’s Over-78 kg Judo Final at Tokyo Olympics

TOKYO (Reuters) – Akira Sone won the gold medal in the women’s over-78 kg judo final at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday, defeating Cuba’s Idalis Ortiz, who was penalized for receiving her third warning in overtime.

After the match, Sone said, “I just wanted to attack first. I went in with the determination that I would not lose. I have been practicing hard for this tournament. I am glad that I was able to show that in this tournament.”

This is the 21-year-old Sone’s first Olympic Games. After winning the World Championships and Grand Slam in 2019, he became the first Japanese judo player to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

Sone (correction) is from Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Influenced by his father and older brother, he started judo at the age of seven. While at Minamichiku High School, he led his team to victory in the national tournament finals, a five-person knockout tournament.
