Less than three weeks after their 18th championship title in the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Boston Celtics have rewarded their superstar with a new record contract. According to US media, Jayson Tatum is about to sign a five-year contract that will earn him $314 million – around €292.2 million. This means that the league’s two top earners will be wearing the champions’ green jersey next season.

According to “The Athletic” and ESPN, the Celtics and Tatum’s management are only working out the final details. The contract can be officially signed on July 6th according to the NBA free agency deadline. With the contract, Tatum would replace his teammate Jaylen Brown as the record holder. Brown and the Celtics had agreed on a five-year contract with a total salary of 303 million US dollars (around 282.7 million euros) just a year ago.
Together, Tatum and Brown took the Celtics to new sporting heights and played a huge role in the Celtics’ 18th title last season. In the final series, the NBA’s now sole record champions beat the Dallas Mavericks 4-1 in the best of seven.

Tatum is one of the best players in the league and is largely responsible for the Celtics reaching at least the Eastern Conference Finals five times in the past seven years since his NBA debut. Tatum, who mostly plays as a forward, objectively has few weaknesses and is of great value to the Celtics both as a shooter and as a passer.
Championship team is for sale
In the future, Tatum is likely to play for a new owner. On Monday, it was also announced that the franchise would be up for sale immediately after winning the title. The family of the owner group Boston Basketball Partners LLC announced on social media that they had “decided after careful consideration and internal discussions to sell the team for reasons of estate and family planning.” A price was not disclosed. At the beginning of this year, Forbes estimated the value of the franchise at 4.7 billion dollars (today 4.37 billion euros).
