Joe Bryant, Former NBA Player and Father of Kobe Bryant, Passes Away at 69

LOS ANGELES (USA). Joe Bryant, Kobe’s father, has died at the age of 69. He had recently suffered a stroke, from which he never fully recovered. Joe survived his son Kobe, who died on January 26, 2020 along with his granddaughter Gigi and seven other people in a plane crash. After college at La Salle University, Joe Bryant played for eight seasons in the NBA. Selected in the first round of the 1975 draft as the fourteenth pick by the Warriors, he was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers before the start of the season. He played with the Sixers for four seasons, then in 1979 he was traded to the San Diego Clippers, where he remained until 1982. In his last NBA season he played for the Houston Rockets. After leaving the NBA, Joe Bryant played in Italy from 1984 to 1991. In 1984 he played for Sebastiani Rieti in A2 together with Dan Gay, brought by team manager Attilio Pasquetti. It was the first of five seasons played in A2 series: after two years spent in Rieti, he played one year in Viola Reggio Calabria (with whom he scored 69 points in a game in 1987) and two years in Maltinti Pistoia. He was then hired by Reggiana, with whom he played two championships in A1 series. In 1985 he won the award as best player of the Italian All Star Game twice: only he and Michael Ray Richardson have won the MVP title more than once. After retiring he became a coach.
