John Deere Classic: Hayden Springer equals course record, Martin Trainer 47th

Hayden Springer will remember it for a long time! Author of an exceptional card of 59 on the TPC Deere Run course (Illinois), the Nashville native managed to equal the course record and joins a very closed circle of players who have returned a card lower than 60, on the PGA Tour. With a perfect day, the American scored, at the end of this first round, 2 eagles on holes 2 and 17 as well as 8 birdies (including 6 made on the first nine holes).

With many missed cuts and complicated weeks at the start of the season, Hayden Springer, who went through Q-School, had a dream day on Thursday: “I don’t really have the words. I’m still shaking a little bit. It’s like something you dream about, right? We all want to go out and shoot 59. I don’t know how many times I’ll get the chance to do that again.”

Leading at -12, Hayden Springer takes the lead over his pursuer, the Finn Sami Valimaki. The former European Tour player is two shots behind the leader, who also put in a very good performance, with a card of 61 (-10). A career record for the 25-year-old.

Author of 11 birdies and one bogey, the qualifier for the Paris Olympic Games is delighted with his day: “I played really well. From tee to green, the whole day was very positive. Of course, the putter has to be good if you want to play under par. It was easy all day. I didn’t miss many shots, and if I did, it was always in the right place. So I didn’t have any problems today.”

Alone at -9, the American Eric Cole completes the provisional podium with a card returned of 62, without bogey.

Trainer 47th, Barjon in difficulty

The best Frenchman at the end of this first round is Martin Trainer in 47th position. Author of a card of 67 (-4), the native of Marseille had a good day with only one bogey conceded for 5 birdies.

Behind him, his compatriot Paul Barjon had more difficulties. The former player of the Korn Ferry Tour (second American division) is one of the 13 players to have made a score above par. At +1 in 144th position, the Bordeaux native scored 4 birdies as well as 3 bogeys and a double bogey.
