Johnny Cueto Opts Out of Contract with Rangers’ Triple-A Affiliate

Johnny Cueto, who played in two Major League Baseball All-Star games, has opted out of his contract with the Texas Rangers’ Triple-A affiliate in Round Rock.

Cueto was 2-1 with a 5.71 ERA in nine starts with Round Rock, including a win Sunday when he allowed three runs in six innings against El Paso. He has struck out 34 and walked eight in 41 innings since agreeing to a minor league contract with the Rangers on April 24.

Cueto, 38, was 1-4 with a 6.02 ERA in 10 starts and three relief appearances with the Miami Marlins last season, when the right-hander spent more than three months on the disabled list with a biceps injury.

Cueto won the World Series with Kansas City in 2015, when he was teammates with current Rangers general manager Chris Young. He spent the next six seasons in San Francisco, the first four with manager Bruce Bochy, who is now in Texas. Cueto made the All-Star Game in 2016, when he went 18-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 32 starts for the Giants.

In his career, he has a 144-111 record with a 3.50 ERA in 368 games (363 starts) over 16 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds (2008-15), Kansas City (2015), Giants (2016-21), Chicago White Sox (2022) and Marlins.
