José Altuve Makes History with Fifth All-Star Game Start

José Altuve earned the starting spot at second base for the American League at the All-Star Game. The Venezuelan will make his fifth start in the All-Star classic in the Houston Astros uniform.

With this selection, Altuve became the player with the most All-Star Game selections as a starter. The second baseman surpassed Hall of Famer Craig Biggio.

Altuve also tied David Concepción as the Venezuelan with the most All-Star Game selections and as a starter in an edition of the All-Star Classic.

Only Salvador Pérez (6) and Luis Aparicio (8) started as starters in the All-Star Game.

Among active hitters, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Wilson Contreras have three starts.

Astro Boy also became the third Latino with five starts as second baseman in an All-Star Game. The other players are Robinson Canó with five and Roberto Alomr with nine appearances.

José Altuve battled with Marcus Semien for the All-Star starting spot this season.

The Venezuelan has a batting average of .306 with 107 hits, 13 home runs, 39 RBIs and 52 runs scored in 84 games this season.

Marcus Semien, meanwhile, is batting .231 with 81 hits, 11 home runs, 45 RBIs and 53 runs scored in 85 games this season.

Jose Altuve and his road to Cooperstown

José Altuve is projected to join the Hall of Fame when his career in the Majors ends.

This year he reached 300 stolen bases and with his ninth All-Star Game he continues to expand his resume to the Hall of Fame.

Altuve is one of five players in Major League history with a career average above .300, 200 or more home runs, 300 or more stolen bases and 2,100 or more hits.

The other four players on this list are: Willie Mays, Derek Jeter, Paul Molitor and Roberto Alomar.
