Judo Coach Leads Physical Fitness Workshops for Elderly Residents at Nursing Homes

Patrick Méry, technical manager of the Loiret judo committee, continues his interventions at the Raymond-Poulin nursing home. Objective: to get the elderly moving.

On Wednesday afternoon, Patrick Méry, sixth dan in judo, technical advisor to the Loiret committee and teacher at the Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle club, spoke at the Les Ombrages nursing home in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin. The aim was to lead and coach a workshop on balance exercises and muscle work, adapted to the elderly.

Accompanied by Émilie, Anaëlle and Matthias, three young judokas from the Stéoruellan club, coach Patrick Méry intervened at Les Ombrages for the fourth and final session of a series of physical fitness workshops, consisting of judo exercises for volunteer residents.

These sessions, planned over three months, are conducted with the assistance of Clémentine Drufin, a teacher in adapted physical activity, in charge of organizing activities at the establishment’s PASA (Adapted Activities and Care Center).

Between five and seven residents were invited to join the tatami, equipped with a judogi jacket, to perform balance and muscle work exercises, gently and with the benevolent assistance of the coach. “In the continuity of this special and unique workshop, we are already planning other activities for the next school year, focusing in particular on boxing, tennis, pétanque, golf, adapted volleyball, etc.,” says Clémentine Drufin.

This judo experiment is the result of an initiative launched by several directors of nursing homes in the sector, who joined forces to set up a project backed by funding from the Regional Health Agency (ARS). “It should normally be repeated at the start of the school year, with the three hospitals for the elderly: Raymond-Poulin in Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle, Les Ombrages in La Chapelle and Nazareth in Orléans,” explains Patrick Méry.
