Judoka Laura Rasoanaivo’s Coach to Join Her at Olympics After State Intervention

Judoka Laura Rasoanaivo will compete on July 31.

Judo player Laura Rasoanaivo’s coach will finally be able to join her in Paris for the Olympics. Her plane ticket will be paid for by the state.

Finally a solution after hours of discussion. It was decided that the national technical director Mamy Randriamasinoro will be able and will join the judoka Laura Aina Razafy Rasoanaivo at the Paris Olympic Games. Many incidents marked Saturday. The presentation of the seven flag-bearing athletes of the Big Island was scheduled for this Saturday at 9:30 am at the headquarters of the Malagasy Olympic Committee in Ivandry. According to the initial program, the ceremony was to be followed around 10 am by the general assembly of the Committee. Several federation presidents have already arrived, as well as two of the athletes to be presented, namely the swimmer Jonathan Raharvel and the judoka Laura Rasoanaivo, as well as many journalists who came to cover the event.

The president of the African Judo Committee and Union, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, arrived around 10am. As soon as he got out of the car, he went to the judoka and a lively discussion began. The trigger for this whole story was that Laura, the day before, posted on Facebook her disappointment that her coach, who had followed her for years, could not supervise her at the Olympics. The post was quickly relayed and commented on. The name of Ashik Houssen, an Olympian and master respected by Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, was circulating on social networks and was singled out by Internet users.

Sous tension

The discussion between the Committee President and Laura, in the presence of the President of the Malagasy Judo Federation Eric Said Bruno, lasted more than an hour. Suddenly, the Secretary General of the Committee, Harinelina Randriamanarivo, approached the journalists at noon to announce that the presentation ceremony was postponed. The atmosphere was very tense, with most preferring to remain silent as observers. The Committee President made phone calls to the Minister of Sports, his Director General and his Chief of Staff in an attempt to resolve the situation and find a solution.

“Each qualified athlete is entitled to an accompanying official designated by the federation. The judo federation sent the secretary general, Said Bruno, to the Tokyo Olympics. And it is not necessarily the coach,” argued Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko. The final decision was as follows: “The president of the federation, Said Bruno, initially accredited, will transmit his accreditation to the DTN Mamy Randriamasinoro. Their plane tickets will be paid for by the ministry. Both will have to pay for the accreditation directly with the IOC and the organizing committee in Paris,” continued the head of the Committee. Laura already left the country on Saturday evening to benefit from a training camp in Belgium. President Eric Said Bruno and the DTN will join her soon.
