The rules of the game

Judoka compete on a tatami mat in five-minute matches (for adults). There are several ways to score points and win the match. In general, the goal is to knock the opponent down and immobilize him on the ground, especially by performing an arm lock.

Judo arrived in France in the 1930s, but developed especially after the Second World War. It was only in 1972 that judo became a regular feature at the Games. Olympics and only 20 years later women’s events were added to the program.

The sport is divided into weight categories and gender.
