Julian Alvarez’s goal sends Argentina to Copa America final with win over Canada

Julian Alvarez scored Argentina’s first goal in a 2-0 win over Canada at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to reach the Copa America final.

Alvarez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after taking advantage of a pass from Rodrigo de Paul, keeping out Moise Bombito’s challenge and slipping the ball under Maxime Crepeau in the Canada goal.

Lionel Messi doubled the lead early in the second half to secure a safe passage to a third consecutive final of a major tournament for the Albiceleste.

Lionel Scaloni’s world and South American champions did not have the game their own way, but a combination of determined defending and goalkeeping kept Jesse Marsch’s Canada at bay.

The combination of Alvarez and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi was crucial in leading Argentina to success at the World Cup in Qatar and has once again been instrumental in their deep run in this competition.

It comes after an exceptional campaign for City in which Alvarez featured more than any other player, playing 54 times and scoring 19 goals.

This was Alvarez’s second goal of the tournament, as his previous goal was also against Canada in the group stage.

Our 24-year-old is just one more win away from adding to his remarkable haul of medals, which includes the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, World Cup, Copa Libertadores and Argentine Primera Division, as well as the 2021 edition of that tournament.

The forward has now won 30 of his 35 caps for the national team, including playing in every match of their famous 2022 World Cup triumph.

His team will now await the result of the second semi-final between Uruguay and Colombia to find out who they will face in the final.

The match will be played at 1am (UK) on Monday 15 July at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
