Juri Kirchmayr: From Bundesliga Youth Star to Graz AK’s Newest Goalkeeper

Juri Kirchmayr, a native of Langenlois, played for the youth division of VFL Wolfsburg for almost three years. Last season, the 18-year-old became the number one goalkeeper in the U19s and played 22 games in the A-Junior Bundesliga, in which he even kept nine clean sheets. Now Bundesliga newcomers Grazer AK have secured the services of the talented goalie, who has also played for the youth national team.

Kirchmayr began his career at USV Langenlois and later at USC Lengenfeld. After moving to Kautzen, he went through all the stages of the St. Pölten Academy before moving to Germany. Because Kirchmayr trained with the VFL professionals throughout the last season, the 1.95 meter tall goalkeeper was able to gain a lot of experience in joint training sessions with Koen Casteels, Pavao Pervan and Co. and is already looking forward to his new challenge: “I’m super happy. Everything is great so far, everyone is making a good impression and I can’t complain. I’m most looking forward to the great GAK fans.”

Despite his young age, Kirchmayr is aware of his abilities and doesn’t just want to be there in Graz: “I want to be number one. I know that will be very difficult, but I believe I can do it.” Kirchmayr will be battling for the jersey with the current number one goalie, Jakob Meierhofer, as well as Jakob Nicht and Haris Mujanovic.

The Langenlois native has set himself high goals for his long career: “My dream is to play in the Champions League and to compete in a World Cup for Austria.” Next week, GAK will be going to a training camp before the first competitive match in the ÖFB Cup against Velden begins on July 26th.
