Justin Gray: A Look into Pallacanestro Varese’s Newest Transfer

While waiting to resolve the Mannion yes/Mannion no question, Pallacanestro Varese has made its first transfer official: Justin Gray. A player who has grown season after season in Europe, to the point of becoming an element that seems to be functional to Varese’s style of play.

We propose his scouting thanks to the video di Synergy with whom Backdoor Podcast has an interesting professional collaboration.

The carreer

Product of that rich mine of talent called Texas Tech (in Italy, among others, his teammates Davide Moretti, Tariq Owen and Matt Mooney have established themselves), born in 1995, Justin Gray arrives in European basketball starting from the bottom. Great Britain (the Bristol Flyers), Kosovo (KB Rahoveci), Portugal (CAB Madeira), always obtaining good performances and double figures in scoring. Then Justin moves up a level: Poland, Greece and Germany. At Bamberg he shows off by scoring 9.1 points (43.5% from 3) and 3.3 rebounds in 20.7′ of use per game. Here then is the call from Italy, in Varesewhere he is expected to take a further step within a game system, Moreyball, which seems to be tailor-made for him.

What kind of player is Justin Gray?

It’s a great catch for Varese’s concept of basketball. 3&D done and finishedexcellent athlete and with an essential playing technique. A definition? He does few things, but he does them very well..

ATTACK

Essential player for 3&D. He is a great athlete: equipped with a long stride and a great body, an excellent counter-attacker, his athleticism is very functional to Varese’s playing system.

It’s a great spot up shooter. He has long arms and a very high release, which makes him extremely dangerous from beyond the arc (43.5% from 3 at Bamberg).

DEFENCE

He has long armscharacteristics that allow him to do many things, especially playing in advance on passes and in marking. He has the body to lend a hand also near the basket, on rebounds and helping his teammates.

What’s wrong?

He’s a bit shaky on defensive switches against quicker players and on 3-1 switches (that is, if he switches against a point guard or a guard he may struggle). Occasionally distracted on blocks, mentally improvable in certain closeouts.

CONCLUSIONS

He is a player who started from the bottom, but who has grown year after year, gaining the trust of the coach and his teammates thanks also to his good character. In terms of quality-price-style of play, it seems to be an absolutely successful purchase by Varese.. After his season at Bamberg he seems to have carved out the definition of a specialist and the perfect 6th man who comes off the bench to bring intensity on both sides of the pitch.
