Kaishu Sano Joins FSV Mainz 05 as Leandro Barreiro Departs

The Japanese international Kaishu Sano is joining FSV Mainz 05. By signing the midfielder, the Rhineland-Palatinate club is reacting to the departure of Leandro Barreiro to Benfica Lisbon.

Those in charge in Mainz have known since the beginning of the year that Leandro Barreiro would be looking for a new challenge after eight years with the club. The fact that the Rhineland-Palatinate team has been preparing for the Luxembourger’s official departure to Lisbon since Tuesday evening was confirmed on Wednesday when they presented Barreiro’s successor.

Kaishu Sano is the name of Mainz’s new signing, who has also been on the Rheinhessen team’s list for a long time. The 23-year-old central midfielder comes from Kashima Antlers, where he matured into a Japanese international (four appearances) over the past one and a half years, and has signed a contract until 2028. Mainz will initially pay a base amount of just over 2.5 million euros for Sano, who still had a contract in Kashima until 2027. The transfer fee can be further increased through bonuses.

“Kaishu Sano will strengthen our midfield with his ball control, his technical ability, his running ability and his fighting spirit,” says sporting director Christian Heidel. “For him, the move to Mainz is the first step out of his Japanese homeland and onto the international football stage – Mainz 05 is the ideal club for this, and we will support Kaishu both on and off the pitch so that he can develop his full potential here in the Bundesliga.”

“On Sunday I played against Yoshinori Muto”

It has “always” been his dream “to play football abroad, the Bundesliga is something very special in Japan. On Sunday I played against Yoshinori Muto and I hope to meet Shinji Okazaki in the next few weeks. Now I’m looking forward to inspiring the Mainz fans just as much as my Japanese compatriots who played here before me.”

Sano is Mainz’s third new signing this summer – and already the second this week. After introducing defender Nikolas Veratschnig (Wolfsberger AC) at the end of June, FSV had already presented attacker Armindo Sieb at the beginning of the week, who comes on loan from FC Bayern Munich for two years.
