The promising Korean badminton players achieved a valuable second place finish at the Asian Championships. It was the best result since the days of ‘Badminton Queen’ Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance).

The junior national team lost to China with a match score of 1 to 3 in the final of the ‘2024 Asian Championships Mixed Team Event’ held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on the 2nd. The mixed team event is a best-of-five match format, with the men’s and women’s singles, doubles, and mixed doubles being the winning team.

Although they lost the top spot to the powerhouse China, it was a meaningful achievement. The junior national team achieved its best result in this competition since An Se-young won in 2017.

Kim Min-sun (Chiak High School), who is expected to be the ‘second Ahn Se-young’, has established her pride. Kim Min-sun won the women’s singles by defeating Shi Wen-jing 2 to 1 (21-7 19-21 21-14), her only win in the finals that day.

Kim Min-sun, the younger twin of Kim Min-ji (Chiak High School), won the doubles championship with her older sister at the Asian Championships last year and won the singles bronze medal. She also won the doubles championship with her older sister in the mixed team final at the ‘2022 World Junior Badminton Championships’ and led the team to victory. Kim Min-sun was also selected as a senior national team member this year.

However, in the remaining matches, they had to feel China’s high wall. In the men’s doubles, Lee Jong-min and Lee Hyeong-woo (both Gwangmyeongbuk High School) lost to Hu Ke-yuan and Lin Xiang-yi 0-2 (14-21 19-21), and in the men’s singles, Lee Seon-jin (Gwangmyeongbuk High School) and in the women’s doubles, Kim Min-ji (Chiak High School) and Yeon Seo-yeon (Hwasun High School) also suffered defeats.
