With the 2024 Paris Olympics just 24 days away, the Taegeuk warriors aiming for a gold medal are gearing up for their final training before leaving for Paris. The badminton team, led by ‘Queen’ Ahn Se-young (22, Samsung Life), has built a separate stadium in preparation for the Paris Olympics, and the archery team has entered into a real-life mode by conducting unique training to overcome the crowd and noise.

On the 25th of last month, the national badminton team held a special rehearsal. The Korea Sports Council and the Korea Badminton Association invested 30 million won three weeks ago to build a special court that recreates the Porte de la Chapelle Arena, where the Paris Olympic badminton competitions will take place, in the Jincheon Athletes’ Village Olympic Ring Hall. The signs surrounding the court have the phrase “PARIS 2024” and the Olympic rings engraved all over them, and a temporary joint press area (mixed zone) was even set up at the back of the stadium.

A special match was also held here to help Olympic athletes overcome their nervousness. From the players’ entrance to the referee’s decision, the game was conducted in the same way as an actual international competition, and over 100 spectators, including the players’ families and reporters, watched the game and cheered, creating an atmosphere similar to a real match.

World No. 1 An Se-young, who defeated Kim Ga-eun (Samsung Life Insurance) 2-1 in the first match of the special match, smiled and said, “As the match progressed, I felt more and more nervous, as if it were a real match. I think it will be a great help in preparing for the competition.”

The ‘world’s best’ Korean archery team trained at a professional soccer stadium to increase their concentration. The men’s team, including Kim Woo-jin (Cheongju City Hall) and Kim Je-deok (Yecheon County Office), who will be pulling the bowstrings at the Olympics, and the women’s team, including Im Si-hyeon (Korea National Sport University) and Nam Su-hyeon (Suncheon City Hall), conducted actual training in the form of team games ahead of the K League 1 match between Jeonbuk Hyundai and FC Seoul held at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on the 29th of last month. The players played the game in which each team took turns shooting three arrows at a target set up 70m away according to the actual rules. The national archery team has a painful memory of losing their 7-game winning streak in the women’s individual event due to the noise of the Chinese spectators at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, so they have been training to adapt to noisy places since then in preparation for the Olympics and Asian Games. The national archery team will hold their second special match on a special stage resembling the archery field at the Paris Olympics starting on the 2nd.
