ⓒNewsis The Korean badminton mixed doubles pair of Seo Seung-jae (Samsung Life Insurance) and Chae Yu-jeong (Incheon International Airport) won their first match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong won 2-0 (21-10 21-7) in the first match of Group B of the mixed doubles preliminary round against Koceila Mammery and Tanina Violet Mammery (Algeria) held at the Porte de la Chapelle in Paris, France on the 27th (Korean time).
Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, ranked 3rd in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) world rankings, won the match with an overwhelming performance, scoring 5 consecutive points in the first game and 9 consecutive points in the second game.
Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jeong, who have the green light to advance to the quarterfinals, will face off against Robin Taveling and Seleni Piek (Netherlands) and Dechapol Puavaranukro and Sapsiree Taerattanachai (Thailand) in the same group, respectively, in order to advance to the tournament.
The Korean badminton team, led by coach Kim Hak-gyun, entered Paris determined to shake off the disappointment of not winning any gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
A total of 12 representative players, including world No. 1 women’s singles player Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance), No. 5 men’s doubles player Seo Seung-jae and Kang Min-hyeok (Samsung Life Insurance), and No. 2 women’s doubles player Lee So-hee (Incheon International Airport) and Baek Ha-na (MG Saemaul Geumgo), are preparing for a golden smash.
Coach Kim, who stated that “our goal is the best performance in Olympic history,” expressed his determination upon leaving the country by saying, “The Olympics will be held in less than a year after the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
