Korean Junior Badminton Team Takes Second Place at 2024 Asian Championships

The Korean junior badminton team won second place in the mixed team event at the 2024 Asian Championships.

The junior national team lost 1-3 to China in the final match held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on the 2nd.

With this, ‘Badminton Queen’ Ahn Se-young achieved her best result since the 2017 competition (where she won).

The mixed team event is played over five matches: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. The country that wins three matches first wins.

In the men’s doubles, which was held first, the Lee Jong-min-Lee Hyeong-woo (both Gwangmyeongbuk High School) pair lost 0-2 (14-21 19-21) to the Hu Ke-yuan-Lin Xiang pair, but in the women’s singles, Kim Min-sun (Chiak High School) defeated Shi Wen-jing 2-1 (21-7 19-21 21-14), thereby equalizing the match.

However, in men’s singles, Lee Seon-jin (Gwangmyeongbuk High School) lost to Wang Zijun 0-2 (13-21 19-21), and in women’s doubles, the Kim Min-ji (Chiak High School) – Yeon Seo-yeon (Hwasun High School) pair lost 0-2 (16-21 20-22) to the Chen Fan-sutian – Liu Jia-yue pair.

China overcame the tragedy of losing men’s singles player Zhang Zhijie in the previous group match to lift the championship trophy.

Zhang Zhijie was the third runner in the match against Japan on the 30th of last month, but suddenly collapsed on the court with the score at 11-11 in the first game.

He was later transferred to the hospital, but never recovered and was pronounced dead.

The exact cause of death is unknown.
