LeBron James Signs $104 Million Contract with Lakers: What It Means for the Team and the NBA

Unsurprisingly, after the draft of his son Bronny by the Lakers, LeBron James has signed a new contract with the “Purple & Gold” franchise. A new contract worth $104 million over two years!

With Klay Thompson having decided to join the Mavericks, the “King” has not given his team a discount, and he is taking the maximum possible. With the possibility of becoming a free agent again in a year, since the second year of his new contract is a “player option” that he can activate, or not. And without the possibility for Los Angeles to trade him since he will also have a clause allowing him to block any transfer.

At 39, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer will earn $49,987,718 in the 2024/25 season, then $53,986,735 in 2025/26, if he decides to activate his “player option” next summer. ESPN specifies, however, that LeBron James could take a million dollars less than the maximum, in order to avoid the Lakers having to “second apron” and give them room to modify their roster. Perhaps via trades?

It should also be noted that he is the second player in the Major League with a clause blocking any transfer, with Bradley Beal. But above all, the first basketball player to exceed 500 million in earnings, just in salaries…
