Ligue 1 TV Rights Dilemma: Decision Looms as Clubs Face Financial Risks

If Jean-Pierre Caillot, president of Stade de Reims but also of the Ligue 1 college recently opened the door to a black screen for the resumption of Ligue 1. This option which would consist of not finding a broadcaster immediately seems to be ruled out, weighing on many clubs too great a financial risk on their immediate future. From then on, it becomes imperative to make a firm and definitive decision.

In recent days, meetings have taken place first among the LFP decision-makers and then within the Ligue 1 college, bringing together the presidents of the elite clubs who are called upon to make a choice for the next broadcaster. Last Saturday, the latter were unable to decide between DAZN’s offer of €375 million per year for eight of the nine matches of each day and the proposal of a 100% Ligue 1 channel without a guaranteed minimum integrated into Warner Bros Discovery’s Max offer.

A new meeting was to be held this Thursday but was finally postponed until Friday according to The Team. This meeting should allow the college of elite clubs to decide between the two offers unless a last-minute offer comes in which would reshuffle the cards. On the Saint-Étienne side, the club’s voice will be carried by Jean-François Soucassethe executive president of ASSE.

He is the one who represented ASSE during the last discussions and he is the one who will speak on Friday on this thorny issue of TV rights. A file that has poisoned the lives of several clubs in the French elite, blocked in this summer transfer window by the lack of visibility on the upcoming contract. A problem that the Forez club is lucky not to know, being able to rely on the financial power of its new shareholder and Kilmer Sports Ventures.
