According to Xinhua News Agency, Zhang Zhijie, a player of the Chinese Youth Badminton Team, suddenly fainted on the court while participating in the last match of the Asian Youth Badminton Championships group stage in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on June 30, and later died after failed rescue efforts. According to Reuters on July 2, citing Indonesian media reports, the Indonesian Badminton Association said that Zhang Zhijie died of cardiac arrest.

The Badminton Asia Confederation, the Chinese Badminton Association and other parties issued statements expressing deep condolences for the unfortunate death of Zhang Zhijie.

The Badminton Asia Confederation announced on the 1st that Zhang Zhijie fainted on the court during a match in the evening of June 30th local time and died at 23:20 after being sent to the hospital. “The Badminton Asia Confederation, the Indonesian Badminton Association and the organizing committee are deeply saddened by this and express their deepest condolences to Zhang Zhijie’s parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association.” The announcement read, “The world badminton world has lost a talented player.”

The Chinese Badminton Association issued a statement, saying that the Chinese Badminton Association continues to maintain contact with the Badminton Asia Confederation, the Asian Youth Badminton Championships Organizing Committee and all parties in Indonesia, and new information will be released to the public in a timely manner. “We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of Zhang Zhijie due to a sudden illness while competing in an international arena. We sincerely thank all sectors of society for their care and help for Zhang Zhijie. Zhang Zhijie was born on January 30, 2007. He won the men’s singles championship and men’s team championship in Group B of the 2023 National Youth Badminton Championships, and the men’s team championship in Group B of the 2024 National Youth Badminton Championships.
