Lloyd Harris He is 27 years old, he was ranked as high as 31st three seasons ago, and today he is ranked 118th in the weekly ranking of the men’s tennis circuit. Without titles, he reached two ATP finals, in Adelaide 2020 and Dubai 2021. In Wimbledonhad only won one match in three previous participations. This year, he entered through the qualifiers, after winning three matches. And in the main draw, he starred on Monday in the point of the day, which was also the match point with which he beat the American Alex Michelsen by 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and 7-6 (11-9), after being two sets down.

Harris had to battle for three and a half hours on the London grass to celebrate an epic victory over Michelsen, which had an even more epic feel to it because of the way it was decided. With the score at 10-9 in the tie-break of the fifth set, the American served out trying to equalise the score; Harris saved a point that was lost twice, after falling to the ground, then went for a drop shot, tried to close with a backhand smash, and finally sealed the match with a cross-court volley. The South African fell, incredulous and face down on the ground, while an ovation rewarded his effort on court 9, one of the secondary courts in the corridors of the All England.

Harris was delighted to be back at the All England after a difficult period with injury, which contributed to his absence from this tournament last year, and a steep drop in the rankings, which he recovered by winning the Surbiton Challenger a couple of weeks ago. “I know I have the level to play and win matches and compete on grass. This is the most matches I have played on grass. I have taken a lot of positive things from my time on grass. I have been getting used to it and I am starting to learn to play a lot better. I feel that is the reason why I have been able to get these wins, especially in the last few days,” said the South African.

Harris awaits in the second round the winner of the match between Italian Mattia Bellucci and Ben Shelton, suspended due to lack of natural light, with a partial advantage of two sets to one for Bellucci.
