The Dallas Mavericks player had 36 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists as Slovenia beat New Zealand 104-78 on Thursday to secure a spot in the semifinals of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Piraeus, Greece. Slovenia needed to win by at least 10 points to advance.
Greece will be Slovenia’s opponent on Saturday, meaning there will be a duel between Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, the leaders of their teams — and the winner will get the chance to play in the final for a ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris.
Josh Nebo had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Slovenia. Shea Ili led New Zealand with 28 points.
Who is going to the Olympics?
The Olympic Pre-Olympics began on Tuesday, July 2, and ends on Sunday, July 7, with a total of 24 teams participating to secure their last chance to be in Paris, according to the official Olympic Games website.
The tournament format has four different venues: Valencia (Spain), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Piraeus (Greece) and Riga (Latvia). In each venue there are six teams divided into two groups of three members.
The teams that finish first and second in each group will face each other in the semi-finals to advance to the grand final, where only the winners of each venue will qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympiad, which begins on July 26.
The semi-finals
All the semi-finals were as follows, although the places of two teams have yet to be decided, one of them being Mexico.
This is how the semi-finals will be played:
In Valencia: Finland vs. Spain; Bahamas vs. Lebanon
In Piraeus: Slovenia vs. Greece; Croatia vs. Dominican Republic
In Riga: Brazil vs. Philippines; Cameroon vs. Latvia
In San Juan: Lithuania vs. Italy or Puerto Rico; Italy or Puerto Rico vs. Ivory Coast or Mexico.
