Lyon exercises purchase option for Mangala

The Belgian international midfielder will continue in Lyon after signing a four-year contract.

Lyon announced on Tuesday that it had exercised the option to buy Belgian international midfielder Orel Mangala, who arrived last winter on loan from Nottingham Forest (English 1st division) and who signed a four-year contract until 2028.

This acquisition amounts to 23.4 million euros to which are added the 11.4 million euros of his paid loan, making a total amount of 34.8 million euros, which makes him the most expensive player in the history of OL.

Nottingham Forest retains a 10% interest on the capital gain of a possible future transfer.

However, the 26-year-old player did not establish himself in Pierre Sage’s starting eleven, participating in only twelve matches (2 goals) in the second half of the season, during which Lyon went from last to 6th place in Ligue 1.

Orel Mangala played in Euro 2024 with the Red Devils, beaten on Monday by France (1-0) in the round of 16.

On June 30, Olympique Lyonnais had already announced that it had exercised the option to buy Saïd Benrahma for €14.4 million. The 28-year-old Algerian striker had also been loaned last winter by West Ham for €6 million.
