Makoto Hasebe will remain with Eintracht Frankfurt even after the end of his active career. As the Eagles announced, the 40-year-old will complete the U21 coaching team.

For Hasebe, who hung up his boots at the end of last season, this is his first job as a coach. Hasebe will be one of three assistants to U21 coach Dennis Schmitt, alongside Arber Mustafa and Dennis Merten. Eintracht’s U21 team plays in the Regionalliga Südwest.
“I am of course looking forward to the new challenge and am very grateful to Eintracht for giving me this opportunity,” Hasebe is quoted as saying on the SGE website. Although this is Hasebe’s first job as a coach, he is not breaking new ground. Towards the end of his active career, he successfully took part in the DFB project ‘Players Pathway’ and acquired the B+ license.
Hasebe also brings a wealth of experience from his active career. He played 384 times in the Bundesliga, 235 of which were for Frankfurt alone. In total, Hasebe has played over 700 competitive games in his long career. In the history of the Bundesliga, only four players were older than Hasebe when they last played.
Hasebe wants to gain “as much experience as possible” first
“I was a professional footballer for 23 years and gained a lot of experience during that time, but the job of a coach is completely different,” he said. “First of all, I need to gain as much experience as possible in my new position and develop myself step by step.”
Eintracht had already announced that they would like to see Hasebe stay at the club even after his career has ended. Now a solution has been found. “We are very, very proud to have won Makoto as a coach for our youth academy,” said Alexander Richter, the head of the youth academy: “He has shown great interest in starting his coaching career with Eintracht Frankfurt’s youth team. We are very happy to accompany him on this path and will try to develop him further in this new role.”
