Malian Football Captain Suspended After Questioning Federation’s Functioning

Highly critical of the Malian Federation (FMF), in a letter questioning its functioning, Hamari Traoré did not take long to be sanctioned by the body. The captain of the Eagles was suspended “for breach of honor and dignity, incitement and revolt against the national team and Malian football,” said an official, on condition of anonymity, after the executive committee of the FMF, organized on June 27.

Players threaten to boycott the national team

The former Rennes player (32 years old, 59 caps), now under contract with Real Sociedad, was summoned by the disciplinary committee but did not respond. He is not the only player to have signed this letter sent in June, in which all deplore the lack of results for years, the “poor management” of their sport by their leaders and the lack of professionalism of the latter. The players threaten to boycott the selection if their leaders do not remedy the crisis that they believe Malian football is going through. The letter intended for the supporters caused a stir in Mali.

The measure taken against Traoré is pronounced “as a precautionary measure” while waiting for the procedure to be transmitted to the disciplinary committee, the leader specified. Mali had been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the last CAN. It occupies only fourth place in its group in qualifying for the 2026 World Cup and has not had a coach since the dismissal of Eric Chelle on June 13.
