Manuel Neuer’s Future: A Stint Abroad on the Cards?

Manuel Neuer has fought back in impressive fashion after breaking his lower leg. The now 38-year-old has revolutionized modern goalkeeping and is the number one goalkeeper for both FC Bayern, where he is still contracted until 2025, and for the national team.

In an interview with the ‘Welt’, Neuer gives an insight into what could happen to him in the future. When asked whether a stint abroad to round off his career is an option for the goalkeeper, he answers: “A difficult question. I always wanted and still want to play at the highest level. I have thought about this option in the course of my career and I have always had inquiries and offers.”

And further: “But I knew that I was in the best hands at FC Bayern because of the environment and the squad. There has never been a club where I have had more fun. Even though you should never say never: I would not move to Saudi Arabia or Qatar.”

Finally, the 123-time national player admits that “if the MLS had ever been an option” were. “I had spoken to Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played there, about it”explains Neuer, “But you have to think about it carefully. Also because you often play on artificial turf, which is not ideal for a goalkeeper.”

At the European Championship, the goalkeeper proved that he can still perform at the highest level. Tomorrow (Friday, 6 p.m.), national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team will face Spain. To beat the top favorite, they need a solid backing. “I’m looking forward to every game, like the one against Spain, which is really a big game”said Neuer.
