Mastering the Main Rules of Field Hockey: Players, Goals, Field Dimensions, Sticks, and Ball

The main rules of field hockey: how many players are on the field, the dimensions of the goals and field and information on sticks and ball

After water polo and football, field hockey is the third oldest team sport to appear at the Olympics.

The rules of the game

Played by teams consisting of 11 players (10 players + 1 goalkeeper) on an outdoor grass pitch (natural or synthetic). The game consists of scoring more goals than the opposing team by shooting the plastic ball into a goal.

Hockey players use hook-shaped sticks to advance a ball towards the opponent’s goal. Matches are played on four quarters of 15 minutes (for a total of 60 minutes), after which the team with the most goals wins.

Each team consists of forwards, midfielders and defenders plus a goalkeeper, with rotational substitutions permitted. Apart from the goalkeepers, players are not allowed to touch the ball with their hands or feet. The ball – which is approximately 1.5 m in size like a baseball but slightly lighter – you can only touch it with the flat side of the sticks and not with the round part.

A hockey field is 91.4 m long and 55 m widewith goals at each end. The goal is 3.66 m wide and 2.14 m high. Each goal is surrounded by a D-shaped shooting circle. Goals can only be scored from inside the opponent’s shooting circle.

Another feature of the game is theabsence of offside. Removed from the rules of hockey in 1996, the abolition of the offside rule served to increase the speed of the game and led to more goals being scored.

Hockey Stick: Differences Between Grass and Ice

Although the principle is always the same, that is, passing a ball or puck with a stick to score goals, there are several variations of this game. Among the various forms of hockey, the best known areField hockeywhich is played at the Summer Olympics, and ice hockey, a sport competing at the Winter Olympics.

Ice hockey is played indoors (in special arenas) or outdoors (mostly on frozen lakes) and requires the use of special skates. The game is played with a small rubber puck and the stick is L-shaped. It is a much more physical sport than field hockey, in fact the players have body and head protection to cushion the blows of their opponents.

In field hockey, the stick is more curved and shaped like a “J”. Field hockey is played outdoors and on grass or generally on a field with synthetic turf. It does not require special protection for the athletes and is played with a small ball. Other variations of this game include roller hockey and in-line hockey.
