Mats Hummels was not nominated for the European Championship. While the national team plays against Spain in Stuttgart for a place in the semi-finals, the 2014 world champion is at the tennis tournament in Wimbledon.
Germany will play against Spain in Stuttgart for a place in the semi-finals of the European Championship (click here for the live ticker). National coach Julian Nagelsmann is once again relying on Antonio Rüdiger and Jonathan Tah in central defence, who served his yellow card suspension in the round of 16 against Denmark (2-0).
Mats Hummels is also a central defender. However, the 35-year-old was not nominated for the tournament by Nagelsmann. The former Borussia Dortmund player now obviously prefers watching tennis rather than following the German national team’s European Championship quarter-finals. On Friday afternoon, Hummels appeared at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon.
The 2014 world champion came to Court 2 of the Church Road facility at the end of the second set, where Jan-Lennard Struff was playing in the second round against Daniil Medvedev.
Hummels moves on to Centre Court
Hummels did not come alone, but was accompanied by his wife Nicola Cavanis. There are hardly any photos or joint appearances of the couple so far. Nicola was last seen at Hummels’ side getting off the plane after returning from the Champions League final (0:2 against Real Madrid).

While Hummels was watching tennis in the light drizzle in London, the national team was warming up for the quarter-final against Spain in Stuttgart. Struff is a friend of Hummels and a big fan of Borussia Dortmund. Hummels is sitting in Struff’s box during the game.

After the third set, the match was interrupted at 5:39 p.m. due to rain. Hummels moved on to the covered center court, where the Spanish rising star Carlos Alcaraz was playing. The defending champion averted a bitter disappointment. The Spaniard defeated the American Frances Tiafoe in five sets 5:7, 6:2, 4:6, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 and thus avoided being eliminated in the third round.
