After it was announced a few weeks ago that the former Schalke and Cologne player Max Meyer is leaving FC Luzern after two years, his new employer has now been confirmed: the 28-year-old midfielder is moving to APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus. He will also play with the record champions in the Champions League qualifiers, in which he has not played since his time at Schalke. If he qualifies, Meyer would play in the premier class for the first time since the 2014/15 season, in which he has played 16 times so far.

In 2018, Meyer left his youth club Schalke 04 for England on bad terms, but he was never really happy in his two and a half years at Crystal Palace. The former top talent had similar experiences at 1. FC Köln, at Fenerbahce Istanbul in the Turkish Süper Lig and at FC Midtjylland in Denmark.

In Lucerne, Meyer was also captain

Meyer only found happiness again at FC Luzern in the Swiss Super League. In his first season, the four-time national player shone with eleven goals in 29 league games. Before his second season in central Switzerland, he was even named captain, but the armband was taken away from him again during the course of the season.

The club withdrew an offer to extend Meyer’s contract after he hesitated, as he revealed publicly a few weeks ago. At least: In his last game for the FCL, he scored a penalty goal in the 1:2 defeat against Lausanne-Ouchy and was able to say goodbye on a positive note.

Meyer’s journey now continues in Cyprus. His new club APOEL Nicosia won the championship title last year, just ahead of AEK Larnaka, who had the same number of points. With Anastasios Donis, he will also meet a well-known name from the Bundesliga at his new club: the Greek played as a striker for VfB Stuttgart between 2017 and 2019.
