Mbappé’s ‘trauma’ was ‘downplayed’ according to Stéphan… UEFA investigates Demiral… Follow the day with us…

Ankara summons German ambassador after controversial Turkish gesture by Demiral

Turkey summoned the German ambassador to Ankara on Wednesday to protest comments made by a German minister following UEFA’s opening of an investigation into Merih Demiral’s controversial gesture, a Turkish diplomatic source told AFP.

“The German ambassador in Ankara has been summoned to the Foreign Ministry over the matter,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

UEFA announced on Wednesday that it was opening an investigation into the “potential inappropriate behaviour” of Merih Demiral, who made the rallying sign for the “Grey Wolves”, a Turkish far-right group, after scoring a goal in Tuesday’s Euro 2024 round of 16 match against Austria (2-1), during which he scored twice.

“Using the European Championship as a platform for racism is completely unacceptable. We expect UEFA to investigate the case and consider sanctions,” German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said afterwards, asserting that “the symbol of Turkish right-wing extremists has no place in our stadiums.”

Kroos ‘not nostalgic’ ahead of potential final game on Friday

“I’m not nostalgic. I don’t think it will be my last match the day after tomorrow, so I think we’ll all see each other again,” he told reporters who asked if he was attending his last press conference.

“The goal, both personal and collective, is to win the tournament. We have a great desire within the team to go further and we are convinced that we are capable of it,” explained Kroos, for whom qualifying for the quarter-finals was only “the minimum goal.”

“In terms of the national team, it’s the second most important title you can win, so it would have immense meaning. If it didn’t have that meaning, I wouldn’t have come back. And if I hadn’t seen that there was a chance that we could do it with the German national team, I wouldn’t have come back either.”

Michael Oliver to whistle on Friday

The English referee will be in charge of the quarter-final between France and Portugal. We are starting to know him well. He had refereed the France-Hungary 2021 at the Euro by the way.

CR7’s heart rate during the penalty shootout against Slovenia, just for you

Barely 100 beats per minute when he hits, and the heart rate climbs to 150 when he puts the ball in the net. We will simply remember that he managed to calm down as he should when it came to taking responsibility.

Our special correspondent Aymeric has also written an interesting article on the evolution of Mbappé’s game, I invite you to read it!

Personally, I go further than you: I think he was at the top in 2018 and that since then his game has gradually been falling apart (we can also think that now he no longer surprises anyone or almost anyone but it comes to the same thing since he does not seem capable of evolving to find new solutions).

Joselu determined to bury Toni Kroos’ career on Friday

“I hope that Friday will be Toni Kroos’ last game. We want to qualify for the semi-finals and we must not think about the players of the other team, but about ourselves.” This is what Joselu said in a press conference. No friendship on the pitch.

He also gave some (deserved) praise: “He was a friend to me, he spoke to me a lot and gave me a lot of advice. He is a fundamental player for Germany as he was for Real.”

Beyond the difference in profile with Thuram, Dédé unfortunately made it clear that he was not very keen on playing the youngsters who are just arriving in the group (hello Warren, hello Bradley)

We missed 4 or 5 unmissable goals. Terribly clumsy, yes, but certainly not poor. The teams that face us do not play their usual game because they fear us and that results in tight matches. But we dominated all our matches and without this incredible clumsiness, everyone would speak of the French team as a formidable team. There remain curious choices by Deschamps like preferring Thuram to Barcola.

No one is whining, Stephan just said it was embarrassing for Mbappé to have this fracture and have to wear a mask – and he’s right

“Mbappé’s “trauma” Oh poor little guy!!! Only broken noses, there are loads of them every year in amateur sports, whatever the sport and people don’t have the same medical support as him. So we’re going to have to stop whining and play a little more

UEFA opens Demiral investigation as expected

Investigation confirmed into Turkish defender’s “potential inappropriate behavior.” Demiral himself posted a photo on his X account of himself raising his arms to celebrate one of his goals, and making a hand sign reminiscent of the “Grey Wolves,” a Turkish far-right group.

An “ethics and disciplinary investigator” has been appointed and further information on the matter will follow, UEFA said in its statement.

“The symbol of Turkish right-wing extremists has no place in our stadiums,” German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser responded on X. “Using the European Football Championship as a platform for racism is completely unacceptable. We expect UEFA to investigate the case and consider sanctions,” she added.

Guy Stéphan likes that (except the last sentence)

To remain factual: They have only taken one penalty in 4 games. They neutralize the opponent by more than 95% who have very few chances. They have just taken out the 2nd team in the world in the FIFA rankings who played defense the entire game. They still produce play, largely dominate the games. Afterwards, they are bankrupt in the final move and it is quite problematic in the result and also distorts the vision that we have during the games. But there are 3 games left and it is now that it will be played out. Personally, I don’t really believe it because several are still in physical difficulty and I think that DD does not rotate enough…

That’s it for this conference!

Samba: “It did him a lot of good. As I sit next to him at the table, I think it’s a goal that will boost him, and which I hope will lead to others.”

Samba and a potential return to Marseille

“It’s not on the agenda. I’ve seen a lot of things circulating on the networks. Everyone knows my attachment to this club, we’ll see. I’m not worrying, we’ll already see Lens’ position towards me. (…) I’m very proud to be the captain of Lens, if we have to stay, we’ll stay. I’m not closing any doors, we’ll see what happens this summer.”

Big laugh when a journalist wants to know if the staff asks the goalkeepers to play it cool to give the attackers confidence

Samba: “No, they are not asking us to slow down! We are lucky to be part of the 23 who represent France, we take it with great pleasure. Everyone contributes their stone to the building to take France as high as possible.”

Areola and the Blues “support Paul Pogba”

“It’s true that we were pleased to see him. He only brought us positive things after this qualification. Afterwards, we all know him, he has the joy of living, he always brought his little touch of fun and his footballing quality. It’s sure that when you have a Paul Pogba in the team, it always feels good. We are there, we support him, it’s up to us to be at his side too.”
