Men’s Triathlon at Paris 2024 Postponed Due to Seine Water Quality Concerns

Postponement of the men’s triathlon due to water quality in the Seine

Following a meeting on water quality held on Tuesday at 3.30 am, involving Paris 2024, representatives of the World Triathlon and its Technical and Medical Delegates, the International Olympic Committee, Météo France, the City of Paris and the Prefecture of the Île-de-France Region involved in carrying out the water quality tests, the decision has been taken to postpone the men’s triathlon event, which was due to take place on 30 July at 8 am.

Taking into account the latest weather information, it has been decided to schedule the men’s triathlon event on 31 July at 10.45am. The women’s triathlon will take place on the same day at 8am. Both are subject to the upcoming in-water events meeting World Triathlon thresholds for swimming. One contingency day remains on 2 August.
Paris 2024 and the World Triathlon reiterate that their priority is the health of the athletes. Tests carried out today on the Seine revealed water quality levels that did not offer sufficient guarantees to allow the event to take place.

Unfortunately, weather events beyond our control, such as the rain that fell in Paris on 26 and 27 July, may alter the water quality and force us to reschedule the event for health reasons. Despite the improvement in water quality levels in recent hours, readings at some points along the swimming course are still above acceptable limits.

We will provide athletes scheduled to take part in the men’s triathlon with all information regarding the postponement, as well as real-time updates on the situation. Updated information regarding tickets and the broadcast of the events on Wednesday 31 July will be shared in the coming hours.
A meeting between World Triathlon and coaches will take place at 8am today to provide further information and the updated programme for 31st July.
