Turkey’s hero against Austria in the last 16 of Euro 2024 on Tuesday (2-1), Merih Demiral will not play in his country’s quarter-final against the Netherlands this weekend. The Turkish defender has just been suspended for two matches by UEFA, according to the German newspaper Bild.

On Wednesday, the body that governs European football opened an investigation into the “inappropriate behavior” Al-Ahli player. On one of his goals, Demiral celebrated by making a sign reminiscent of that of the “Grey Wolves”, a Turkish far-right group.
A gesture that clearly does not go down well in this complicated period… And to prevent the Euro from becoming too political, UEFA has therefore decided to take a strong decision by giving a big sanction to Demiral, knowing that the latter will only be able to play again in the event of a potential final in Turkey. A real blow for the Turks who are losing one of their leaders in the middle of the competition.
