Minister Responds to Delay in Medical Treatment for Son of Chinese Badminton Player

JAKARTA – Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ari Obedjo responded to the delay of the medical team in treating the only son of China Zhan Zhi Jie, which left the life of the flying athlete.

“We have coordinated with PBSI and we can say that we are doing bad weather. What are the medical and emergency preparations,” said Dito when met at GOR Tennis Indoor, Senayan, Jakarta, Wednesday, July 3, 2024.

The 17-year-old badminton player fell to the ground and crashed during a match against Japanese men’s singles player Kazuma Kawamo at the 2024 Badminton Asia Junior Championships tournament at GOR Amongrogo, Yogyakarta, Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Zhang received first aid only about 40 seconds after his fall. The medical team must first wait for the receiver’s permission to be able to manage Zhang according to BWF regulations.

The medical team also spent one minute and 20 seconds from entering the field and then decided to take the athlete to the hospital.

The Minister of Industry stressed that in the future his party will give firmness to the organizers of the event so that the doctor is quickly held for emergency intervention so that similar things cannot happen again.

“Although there is an explanation (the medical team entered) must (wait) for the receiver’s decision, we are looking at this from all points of view in order to find the error for what,” he said.

The incident also heated up after the BWF officially released its statement on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

In the statement, the BWF said the authority for instructions on the management of emergency medical conditions lay with the tournament organiser.

The Sports Minister also opened his voice on a statement which is seen as an impression of hand washing of the world badminton parent and wanted to submit this issue to the Badminton Association of Asia (BAC) and the local Regulatory Committee.

“Of course I think it’s a risk, where local organizers always have to react first, that’s what it is. That’s what we’re investigating now. How can you, that’s what it is like it’s the doctor seemed like there was quite a long pause,” he said.

Zhang was taken to a hospital about 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) from the scene. The journey took about 10 minutes.

At the hospital, Zhang received medical treatment before the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) announced that the athlete’s life was not saved on Sunday evening.
