Turkish national team secures progress to quarter finals Euro 2024 after defeating Austria 2-1 in the last 16 in a match that took place at Leipzig Stadium, Germany, Wednesday (3/7) early morning WIB.

Turkey’s two goals in the match were scored by defender Merih Demiral, while Austria’s reply was scored by Michael Gregoritsch. Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella praised the spirit of his players when they silenced Austria.

“Our team spirit was visible until the last minute. There were some small lapses in team spirit in the first group stage game, but we got it back here,” Montella said, as reported by the official Euro 2024 website.

Against Austria, Ay-Yıldızlılar’s squad played without star Hakan Calhanoglu. On the other hand, Turkish goalkeeper Mert Guno performed heroically with a brilliant save in the final minutes of the match.

Montella urged his players to stay focused after the crucial win over Austria, saying that Turkey will face a tough opponent in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

“We have equalled the number of games we won at EURO 2008: this is a very important achievement,” said the former Italy striker.

“Our next opponent is the Netherlands: a team that fights like lions. We will gather mental and physical strength and continue on our path,” he continued.

Turkey have set a unique record at Euro 2024, scoring seven goals so far from six different scorers.

Turkey also became the second team in Euro history, after Hungary in 1964, to start a knockout match with two teenagers in Arda Guler and Kenan Yıldız, both aged 19.
