During the eighth round of the Moto GP championship, Aleix Espargaro crashed heavily during the sprint race of the Dutch Grand Prix. A week later, the diagnosis was made: a fracture of the 5th metacarpal of the hand. In a press conference this morning, the Aprilia rider announced that he was withdrawing from the weekend’s race to speed up his recovery.
The 34-year-old rider made his decision after a few laps on his bike around the Sachsenring circuit this morning. The Spaniard is currently in his final season in MotoGP, before joining Honda in 2025 as a test rider for the Japanese manufacturer (which has not had a win since 2021).
Note that this is the second withdrawal of the weekend, since Alex Rins (Yamaha) suffers fractures to the wrist and an ankle after a heavy fall at the Dutch Grand Prix. He is replaced by the Australian Remy Gardner, who had already competed in the premier class in 2022.
