On Tuesday, the 34-year-old Walker announced his decision to no longer be a professional basketball player via a social media post. The point guard thanked family members, teammates and coaches and said: “I know that I would not have made it this far without this incredible support.”

Drafted number 9, Walker was drafted by the then Charlotte Bobcats in 2011. The NCAA champion with the Connecticut Huskies quickly established himself in the NBA, becoming an All-Star for the first time in the 2016/17 season and being called up four times in total.

In 2018/19, Walker averaged 25.6 points per game and was named to the All-NBA Third Team. To this day, he leads the all-time list in Charlotte in terms of points and successful three-pointers. After leaving North Carolina, Walker played for the Boston Celtics, but injuries prevented him from making a breakthrough. A trade to Oklahoma City (2021) followed, and Walker then signed with the New York Knicks.

Injuries mark the late migration

Walker continued to be plagued by injuries in the late stages of his career. In February 2022, he moved on to Detroit to play for the Pistons, before a nine-game interlude in the Dallas Mavericks jersey followed (2022/23). Walker recently also appeared in the Euroleague, and his last stint as a professional basketball player was with AS Monaco. Coach Sasa Obradovic only brought the playmaker onto the court for international matches due to load management.
