NBA Pro Jontay Porter Faces Court After Betting Fraud Ban

NBA professional Jontay Porter, who was banned for life for betting fraud, must now also answer to the court. This is according to documents from the New York Public Prosecutor’s Office that were published on Wednesday (local time).

Jontay Porter is being charged with a crime in connection with the case, it says, but the exact charges are not specified.

Porter was banned for life from the North American professional league NBA in April. As a player for the Toronto Raptors, the 24-year-old is said to have passed on confidential information to bettors and placed bets on NBA games himself.

In addition, according to the NBA, the brother of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr. intentionally allowed himself to be substituted at least once in order to win betting money. Four other people with whom Porter is said to have worked together are already facing charges in court.

Porter was a largely unknown figure in the NBA, playing only 37 games in the 2020-21 and 2023-24 seasons. Despite his low profile, he earned around $2 million during his time in the league with the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto.
