New complaint rule also applies to the European Cup

In the future, only the captains of the teams will be allowed to complain to the referee in the European Cup. Otherwise, players who disregard this captaincy rule will be cautioned with a yellow card in European club competitions. The European Football Union (UEFA) announced this on Friday.

It is thus extending the rule that proved successful at the European Championships in Germany to the European Cup competitions. “The success of this new approach, which is accepted as progress by the players and the public, strengthens our confidence that this is the right way to go,” said UEFA, which sees this as more respect and fair play being applied.

At the European Championships, only the team captains are allowed to discuss the referee’s decisions with him. This means that there are significantly fewer delays in the game and fewer groups forming on the pitch. If a goalkeeper is the captain of a team and is too far away from the referee, the team in question can nominate another field player to act as a contact person for the referees.
