Nick Kyrgios announces his return to competition

Absent from the courts since June 2023 and a defeat in the first round of the Stuttgart tournament against Yibing Wu, Nick Kyrgios revealed during an interview given as part of the UTS circuit that he would be back in competition next month. First in doubles, then in singles. The Australian, enfant terrible of the circuit, had had a superb 2022 season (doubles title at the Australian Open, singles final at Wimbledon) before seeing his body give up on him. First a cyst in a knee which required an operation in January 2023, then a ligament problem in the wrist in June of the same year.

At Wimbledon for commentary and training

Present at Wimbledon to commentate the matches, Kyrgios is looking forward to the return to action. “I’m also here to train. For two weeks, I’m going to try to hit the ball with players from the draw and test my wrist. My operation was 10 months ago and I’m continuing to prepare for my return. The idea is to resume doubles next month. It’s going to be super motivating. After that, if all goes well, I’ll move on to singles and we’ll see how long it lasts.”

While he had often expressed in the past the possibility of stopping tennis to devote himself to his other passions, the 29-year-old Australian seems to have rediscovered his love of the yellow ball. “During this break, I missed playing a lot. I missed the public, I missed my fans. I even miss the ones who hate me. I missed everything. I can’t wait any longer. Winning matches, beating guys, competing, I missed all that. I want to give my fans another year or two of the Nick Kyrgios experience.”
