Nigeria Olympic Committee Urges Federal Government to Release Funds for Preparations

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has urged the Federal Government to release funds as soon as possible so that Team Nigeria can begin their preparations soon.

In an impassioned appeal, NOC Secretary General, Tunde Popoola, said the NOC’s strategic effort is targeted at athletics, wrestling, weightlifting and badminton to break the 32-year-old gold medalist’s jinx that has continued to elude Nigeria.

Recall that Nigeria’s last Olympic gold medal was won at the 2000 Sydney Games, where the men’s 4x400m team won a silver that was later converted to gold by the IOC after the US team was disqualified for fielding a drug offender in the final race.

“The NOC is responsible for the Olympics and the Ministry is their partner, unlike in the past when there was a discretionary agreement. This strong synergy between the NOC and the Ministry has made many things work better and so far our preparations for the Paris Games are in perfect order.

”The athletes have performed very well in various international meetings, breaking and creating records; the only thing we need to do now is to support it through positive media reports.

“We therefore appeal to the federal government to ensure the release of funds to the Ministry and allow us to achieve the desired results in Paris,” Popoola said.

“Our strength is in athletics, wrestling and weightlifting. We also hope for a podium finish in badminton,” Popoola added.
