Nigerian Olympic Committee Urges Federal Government to Release Funds for Early Preparations

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has urged the Federal Government to release funds as soon as possible to enable the Nigerian team to begin preparations early.

In an impassioned appeal, NOC Secretary General Tunde Popoola said the NOC’s strategic efforts were targeting athletics, wrestling, weightlifting and badminton to help Nigeria break its 32-year-old gold medal jinx that has continued to be elusive.

Nigeria’s last Olympic gold medal came at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, when the men’s 4x400m team won silver, which was converted to gold by the IOC after the US team was disqualified for drug use.

“Unlike in the past when agreements were made arbitrarily, the NOCs host the Olympics and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is their partner. This strong synergy between the NOCs and the Ministry of Education has made many things go better, and preparations for the Paris Olympics are progressing perfectly so far.

“As athletes, we have achieved great results in various international competitions, breaking and creating records. All we have to do now is maintain that momentum through positive media coverage.

“That is why we are appealing to the federal government to fund the ministries and agencies so that they can achieve the desired results in Paris,” Popoola said.

“Our strengths are in athletics, wrestling and weightlifting. We also hope to reach the podium in badminton,” Popoola added.
