Norris leads first free practice at Silverstone

After the intense outcome of the Austrian GP, where the first two classified in the championship, Max Verstappen y Lando Norris, They touched each other when they were fighting for victory and George Russell took an unexpected victory, Formula 1 returned to action five days later at the British circuit of Silverstone, scene of the first Grand Prix in history in 1950. The first free practice session of a weekend that returned to its usual format after the sprint at the Red Bull Ring, ended with Norris as the fastest (1.27.420), ahead of Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and his teammate Oscar Piastri with the McLaren.

With just ten minutes of the session underway, an accident involving Yuki Tsunoda (VISA RB) interrupted free practice with a red flag. The Japanese driver lost the car behind him and got stuck in the gravel at the Luffield corner, the seventh corner on the circuit.

Russell set the first time (1.28.046) on hard tyres, and was also beaten on this compound. Carlos Sainz (1.27.925) and Lewis Hamilton. The Madrid native, who achieved his first F1 victory here three years ago, has started off feeling good.

On the medium tyre, Verstappen (1.27.729) and Russell again were at the top of the timesheets, separated by just 15 thousandths of a second, with the two Ferraris next. In the final test, on the new soft tyres, Lando Norris left his personal mark (1.27.420) on his first flying lap and nobody was able to beat him, although his direct rivals were spared a set of soft tyres.

Piastri suffered a hydraulic failure and tried to reach the pits using the downhill slope from Turn 15, but stopped at the pit lane entrance and Race Direction had to temporarily close it to remove the car.

Aston Martin, at home

Aston Martin, which has its headquarters a few kilometers from the circuitdoes not arrive with the best expectations for the home Grand Prix. Alonso, who has only scored points in one of the last five races (Canada), asked for patience on Thursday, knowing that There will be no major improvements this weekend, although the front wing flaps have been modified to improve performance at Silverstone. Mercedes and McLaren have incorporated significant updates, while Red Bull has tweaked the profile of the ground.

The Asturian started sixth, three tenths off Norris’ time and two off his teammate Stroll in his first contact.

Between the four juniors who have taken part in this round – Colapinto (Williams) Bearman (Haas), Hadjar (Red Bull) and Doohan (Alpine) – , The Briton, Ferrari’s reserve, has been the most effective, making the most of his opportunity behind the wheel to finish fourteenth a day after being confirmed by Haas as a starter for 2025. For his part, Hadjar has paid the price of being a rookie by blocking Norris in a terrifying manoeuvre, which has forced Lando to brake sharply.
