GERMAN – England national team coach Gareth Southgate said he wanted to enjoy the success of The Three Lions – the nickname for the England national team – in qualifying for the semifinals of the 2024 European Cup. This is because he felt hurt by the many criticisms directed at him.

England secured their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after crushing Switzerland. Harry Kane and his friends won on penalties with a final score of 5-3 after a 1-1 draw until extra time.

Despite successfully leading England to the semi-finals for the third time in the last four major tournaments, Southgate has not escaped criticism. The 53-year-old coach received criticism following the Three Lions’ very boring performance.

Even the fans threw some plastic cups at him during the match against Slovenia as a form of protest. With the many criticisms directed at him, Southgate felt very sad. Therefore, the tactician born in Watford, England felt that he and the Three Lions players deserved to enjoy the success of qualifying for the semifinals.

“There’s always joy in this job. I love the players and sharing moments with them,” Southgate said, as quoted by 90min.

“It’s inevitable that when things get personal it hurts. I don’t think it’s normal to have beer thrown at you. But we’re in our third semi-final in four tournaments. We’ll keep working hard, keep fighting and enjoy the Euros.”

“I took this job to try and develop English football, to give people nights like that. We keep giving people great memories,” Southgate said.
