Ortolá dethrones Veijer in Moto3; Aldeguer consoles himself with a second in Moto2

Sergio García Dols maintains his lead with a third place and David Muñoz closes the podium in the small category

MADRID, 30 (EUROPA PRESS)

Spanish rider Iván Ortolá (KTM) snatched victory on Sunday from Dutchman Collin Veijer (Husqvarna) on the last lap in the Moto3 race of the Dutch Grand Prix, the eighth round of the World Motorcycling Championship, while Fermín Aldeguer (Boscoscuro), burdened by a ‘long lap penalty’, and Sergio García Dols (Boscoscuro) climbed onto the podium in a Moto2 race won by the Japanese Ai Ogura (Boscoscuro).

In the small-displacement category, Ortolá snatched victory from the local rider at the last moment and David Muñoz (KTM) was third, while Colombian David Alonso (CFMoto) reinforced his lead despite finishing fifth.

The Valencian, who had led the race until the halfway point, waited for his chance and attacked the Dutch idol at the final chicane, just a few metres from the chequered flag. In a photo finish, he claimed his first win of 2024 – he had not won since the 2023 Spanish Grand Prix – by just 0.12 seconds.

In addition, David Muñoz finished on the podium ahead of José Antonio Rueda (KTM), while David Alonso was fifth and strengthened his lead in the small category; the Colombian now has 154 points, 39 more than Veijer, now second after beating the Spaniard Dani Holgado (GasGas) in the general classification, who could only finish eleventh this Sunday and fell to third position.

Although poleman Ángel Piqueras (Honda) defended his position at the start, Ortolá, who started fourth, only took a few laps to move up to first place. Meanwhile, the two main title contenders, Colombian David Alonso (CFMoto) and Dani Holgado (GasGas), began their comeback after starting thirteenth and fifteenth, respectively.

As the laps went by, both managed to hook up with the leading group, made up of ten riders and led by Ortolá until, with ten laps to go, the local rider, Collin Veijer (Husqvarna), managed to take the lead.

The Dutchman seemed to be getting away, but on the last lap, at the final chicane, the Calincant rider emerged to pass him and beat him to the finish line by just 12 thousandths. Muñoz rounded out the podium in Assen.

Among the other Spaniards, Adrián Fernández (Honda) finished seventh, just ahead of Piqueras, while Joel Esteban (CFMoto) finished fifteenth and Xabi Zurutuza (KTM), nineteenth.

A ‘LONG LAP’ CONDEMNS ALDEGUER

In Moto2, Japanese rider Ai Ogura (Boscoscuro) claimed his second win of the season ahead of Fermín Aldeguer (Boscoscuro), who dominated most of the race until he was hampered by a long lap penalty.

Meanwhile, Sergio García Dols (Boscoscuro) finished his participation in Assen with a third place that allows him to stay at the top of the general classification. He now leads with 138 points, 14 more than Ogura, who has moved up to second place due to the absence of the American Joe Roberts, who had to undergo surgery after his serious fall on Friday.

Despite his bike lifting at the start, Aldeguer was able to retain the lead once the lights went out, with Ogura on his wheel. The two were joined in the fight by the leader Sergio García Dols, Alonso López (Boscoscuro) and the Italian Tony Arbolino (Kalex).

With 17 laps to go, Arón Canet (Kalex) and Albert Arenas (Kalex) crashed in unrelated incidents at Turn 2, while up front Aldeguer consolidated his lead, which only began to be in jeopardy when, nine laps from the end, he was given a long lap penalty.

The Murcian served his penalty three laps later, and Ogura took the lead ahead of García Dols. The Castellón native managed to pass the Japanese at the chicane, before starting lap 19, with four ahead of him, but the latter returned the pass before Aldeguer also overtook the Burriana native.

Grip problems hampered the final laps of the leader, who fell behind the top two. In the end, Ogura secured his second victory of the season ahead of Aldeguer and García Dols was content with finishing on the podium.

Marcos Ramírez (Kalex) also finished the race in seventh place, ahead of Alonso López and Manu González (Kalex). Jeremy Alcoba (Kalex) was thirteenth; Izan Guevara (Kalex), nineteenth; Dani Muñoz (Kalex), twentieth; Alex Escrig (Forward), twenty-first; and Xavi Artigas (Forward), twenty-third.
