Latvia’s number one racket, Alyona Ostapenko, will meet Ukrainian Daria Snigur, who won the qualification, in the second round of the Wimbledon Championship today. The game will start on the 16th court no earlier than 3 pm Latvian time.

Ostapenko is ranked 14th in the WTA ranking and is seeded 13th in the tournament, while Snigur, who overcame three qualifying rounds at Wimbledon, is ranked 130th in the world. The two tennis players have not met on the court so far. In the first round match, Ostapenko beat Australian Ajla Tomljanovic (WTA 136), who received a special invitation from the organizers, 6-1, 6-2.

In the qualifying tournament, Snigur beat the Swiss Jill Teichmann (WTA 223rd), compatriot Katarina Zavacka (WTA 197th) and Turkish Zeynep Sonmez (WTA 137th) consecutively in the qualifying tournament, but in the first round of the main tournament she beat the French Oceana Dodena (WTA 79.).

Ostapenko is competing in the Wimbledon tournament for the ninth time, and the best achievement is the semi-final reached in 2018. Last year, she did not make it past the second round, losing to Romanian Sorana Kirstea in a battle lasting more than two and a half hours.

Snigur has mostly played in International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments this year, reaching the finals three times and winning the W-50 series tournaments on hard surfaces in France and Georgia, but losing to Ržićanu in the W-75 indoor tournament on hard surfaces. She also made it through three rounds of qualifying at the Australian Open, losing in the first round of the main event, and reaching the second round of qualifying at the French Open.

In the 1/16 final, the winner will have to meet the 23rd seed of the competition, Carolina Garcia (WTA 24th) or the American Bernarda Peru (WTA 97th). It has already been reported that Latvian tennis player Darja Semenistaja, who lost in the first round, did not pass the qualification.

Ostapenko will also compete in the doubles competition with her usual partner Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok at Wimbledon, meeting Australian tennis player Daria Seville and Chinese Yuan Yui in the first round. This game is also scheduled for Thursday. The third “Grand Slam” tournament of the season, the Wimbledon Championship, will take place until July 14.
