Overcoming Adversity: The Inspiring Story of Guillaume Gailly, French Parabadminton Champion

Guillaume Gailly has been passionate about badminton since he was 13. It was therefore quite natural for him to become a professional coach. But eight years ago, he was the victim of a traffic accident while riding a motorbike. He then had his lower left leg amputated and began rehabilitation with a prosthesis. This is the whole story that he came to tell to the students of the Petit Bois school in Plouguin at the end of June 2024. And this at the initiative of a student’s mother, a member of the Ploudalmézeau badminton club. Because Guillaume Gailly, still passionate about his sport, continues to practice it at a very high level. He is now a member of the French parabadminton team and has accumulated national, European and world titles. An employee of the Finistère departmental badminton committee, he is tasked with developing the practice of “bad” in the department.

“Are you still in pain?”

Impressed, the children asked him many questions throughout the day. “How long did the rehabilitation last?”, “How much does a prosthesis cost?”, “Do you still have pain?” Guillaume Gailly answered them, explaining for example that he continues to suffer from “phantom pain”. He also told the children that he has two prostheses, one for sports and another for everyday life. This helped to raise their awareness of disability and the benefits of sport, both from a physical and mental point of view. “It was a great experience for the 190 students at the school”, concludes Marie Dano, the school’s director.
