Patri Guijarro enters an Olympic list without Maite Oroz or Alba Redondo

MADRID, 3 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Midfielder Patri Guijarro (FC Barcelona) was included on Wednesday in the Spain squad drawn up by national team coach Montse Tomé for the 2024 Paris Olympics, in a list that does not include midfielder Maite Oroz (Real Madrid) or forward Alba Redondo (Real Madrid).

The Spanish national team announced its squad for the Olympic Games this summer in the French capital on Wednesday on its social media profiles. The squad includes regulars such as Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas and Jenni Hermoso, while the world champion Alba Redondo and Real Madrid’s Maite Oroz are the two main absentees.

Tomé has called up 18 players, the limit set by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), plus another four as reserves –with no age restriction, unlike in the men’s tournament–, of which 16 were part of the squad that was crowned world champion last August in Australia and New Zealand.

The national women’s football coach faced one of her most delicate lists since taking office on Wednesday, giving up part of the compact block she has used until now. She also added midfielder Patri Guijarro for Paris 2024, one of the best in the world and who finally decided to be available again after being one of the 15 who gave up playing for Spain in September 2022 if no changes were made.

The presence of the Balearic player, a key player and ‘motor’ of FC Barcelona, is great news for the world champions in the fight for Olympic medals. Although it also narrowed the possibility of being one of the chosen ones even further. Especially considering that the midfielders Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas – also from Barça – and Jenni Hermoso will not miss the event.

In the middle, the presence of Patri Guijarro ‘changes’ everything. The Balearic player can play as an interior pivot and if she does so in the first position she would be in direct competition with Tere Abelleira, who can also be replaced there by Laia Aleixandri as happened in the ‘F4’ of the Nations League.

The pivot Tere Abelleira will also travel to the French capital, while her teammate at Real Madrid Maite Oroz will be left out of the tournament, as was the case for the 2023 World Cup, when she did not make the final cut. The new signing for Real Madrid, Alba Redondo, is also not one of the 18 chosen, although she is part of that reserve of four players, which also includes the goalkeeper Elene Lete, the defender María Méndez – she was one of the ‘fixed’ ones – and the attacker Vicky López.

Tomé will go to Paris with two goalkeepers, Cata Coll and Misa Rodríguez. In defence, he has three centre-backs and three full-backs, which is why he opted for captain Irene Paredes, full-backs Ona Batlle, Olga Carmona and Oihane Hernández, and centre-backs Laia Aleixandri and Laia Codina.

At the front, Mariona Caldentey, Salma Paralluelo, Athenea del Castillo and Lucía García, the most used by the Oviedo native, have already secured their place, as well as the red-and-white and also world champion Eva Navarro.
